The One Where Everyone is Different
When my son had just turned 18, he thought he wanted to get a tattoo to commemorate the event.
"What do you think you will get?" I asked him. "I'm going to get Bar Simpson put on my shoulder," he told me. Being a Dad of a young man, I didn't think that was a good idea and I told him to check out prices and tattoo shops before he made a final decision.
Matt came back to me a few days later saying, "Do you know how much it costs to get a tattoo?" I really didn't know the cost but apparently, it was more than he was willing to pay. For which I was grateful.
"I'll tell you what," I said without missing a beat, "Wait until you are twenty-five and I pay for your tattoo, no matter the price."
Time went by as it usually does and when Matt's twenty-fifth birthday came around I asked "So, you still want to get that tattoo?"
"You were right Dad" he stated much to my surprise. "I don't want a tattoo just so I can be different, like everybody else."
That thought has stuck with me for years. "Different like everybody else."
I'm sure you have seen it. "Hire me!" says the attorney on TV. We are different. We are bigger, care more, and have a cool jet to get our team around the country."
"Hire me!" says the real estate agent. "I'll guarantee you a price for your home. I'll sell your home for a 2% commission. No! Wait, I'll sell your home with no commission!!"
When you do your research you will find there is a catch, a gotcha. There is some condition or the provider is so selective in who qualifies for the special offer that almost no one will be able to meet the criteria.
I've found through working hard each day that being straightforward, and offering great service for a fair price with no "gotcha clause" allows me to sleep at night knowing that the customers I help are getting a good night's sleep too.
